Origins of the Dance

Bhavai dance is inspired by women going to the well for water with their pitcher on their heads. Going for water was a long journey for them. They used to carry multiple pitchers to fulfill their water requirement. In the dance, also, we see women balancing various pitchers performing on brass plate edges, broken glasses, or sword tips. As if they are representing their life when they go for water and how hard it is for them. It is like walking on broken glasses or walking on the edges of a plate.

The first Bhuvai dancer recorded of Rajasthan is Mrs. Krishna Vyas Chhangani. Initially, only women used to take part in this dance performance but with its popularity men started taking part in this too. Bhavai dance is now a part of various dance competitions held globally. In some reality talent shows too you will be able to witness them.

Bhavai Dance Performance

Bhavai Dancers hold as many pitchers as they can balance while dancing to perform this dance. Some dancers balance up to 22 pitchers on their heads. The movements of this dance are very smooth and slow done gracefully. Women move their hips in swaying motion and lift their legs very gently. Male participants follow the same pattern.

The amazing fact of Bhavai dance is that all participants keep you curious about what their next move will be. You are always on your tiptoe whether those pitchers will fall or not. The curiosity and excitement all are there. Dancers are dressed up in beautiful colorful garments, one more specialty of both states.
