Four Forgotten Heritage Sites in India

Every building, every site speaks a thousand words. They tell us a lot about the feelings and sentiments involved during the creation of breath-taking edifices and monuments. They try to communicate with the people with its strong, long and prominent walls, marvelously sculpted windows and tombs, gardens blossoming with thousands of fresh and fragrant flowers.

It touches and connects with the hearts and souls of people. But are we engrossed to go and visit these sites which recount our national cultural heritage? These are all fading away into oblivion, and we still aren’t aware of beautiful and splendid monuments that the people can cherish about.

Following are some of the long lost sites and monuments with historical importance in India:

Qila Mubarak, Bathinda

Bathinda is a city in Punjab which was a part of the glorious Indus Valley civilization. It has also been mentioned in Mahabharat. Bathinda, known for rich cultural sites has Qila Mubarak, located in its heart. Qila Mubarak has been into existence for centuries now. It is situated at Dhobi Bazaar, one of the busiest market places in the city. Quila Mubarak was constructed by Raja Dab in 90-110 AD. The main reason behind the construction of this fort was to prevent the Huns from invading the Kingdom of Emperor Kanishka. One of the most interesting facts of the monument is that the first and the only woman ruler of Delhi Sultanate, Razia Sultana was imprisoned in it.

Maluti Temple is located deep in the forests of Jharkhand. These 72 terracotta temples are the remains of the old dynasty rulers of the 17th century. The main man behind the construction of these temples was King Basanta, a religious ruler who was keen on building temples more than palaces. But unfortunately, these temples are on the list of the most endangered heritage sites.

Kalinjar Fort is located in the Banda District of Uttar Pradesh state. It is situated near the temple-city and the World Heritage Site of Khajuraho. The fort has several temples that can be dated back in the 3rd or 5th century, which was then ruled by the Gupta Dynasty. Many Hindu princesses and Muslim rulers fought very hard with the sole purpose of conquering the fort. Though the Mughals were the only one who was able to rule the fort for a considerable period.

Rabdentse, Sikkim

Though many people aren’t aware of the fact, Sikkim has a very remarkable history of heritage sites. Many places are historically and culturally unknown and hidden. One of these places in Sikkim to visit is Rabdentse, which was once used to be the capital of the Sikkim Empire during the late 17th and 19th centuries. Though the city was later was destroyed by the Gorkhas, it is still a prominent place for a visit, especially for historians.

Protecting Our Heritage

Thus these were some of the historical places listed above, which are gradually losing their historical and cultural importance. Even though people are moving towards modernization at a very fast pace, it is disheartening seeing the beautiful historical and culturally defined monuments and sites fading away and are even being categorized under the list of endangered sites. We should not let all these sites and monuments dye out. We should strive hard, try to protect and preserve these incredible sites, which are spoken out our diversely rich Indian ethnicity and culture.
