Purpose of the Gethinglim dance

Gethinglim dance is also known as the Cricket dance, inspired by the movements of the insect Cricket. These insects arrive during the onset of the summer season and late spring. The dance is performed during May or June to indicate the beginning of summer.

Gethinglim Dance Performance

It is a unique dance form which portrays the movements of the Cricket insect. The dancers move their hands and legs representing the movements of a cricket. The dance is performed in groups, by both men and women. The dancers form circles and dance to the beats of traditional music.

The hands are moved to and fro depicting the flying technique of a cricket. Footsteps are synced with the beats of the drums. It involves small, slow hopping movements like that of a cricket. While the women move gracefully, the men have more vigor and energy in their steps.

Gethinglim is one of the best things you will witness when visiting Nagaland in the summer months. The tribal people put up a great show for entertaining the crowd enhanced by colourful costumes and energetic music.

Dance Costume

The Gethinglim dance is performed in traditional attire. The women wear a simple skirt and blouse, while the men wear the traditional dhoti or cloth tied around their waist. To attract the audience, the dancers adorn themselves with beautiful metal jewelry on the hands, legs, ears, and neck. Headgears are an essential part of their costumes worn by both men and women.
