This dance is very physically demanding. Culturally, the men are seen performing such vigorous dances. This dance form is special because women take part in it and perform with swords.

Dance Performance

Tera Tali is the oldest dance form in central India. The dance starts with two-three women of the community squatting on the ground with a small metal cymbal or Manjiras tied to different parts of their body with a sword in their mouth. They try to balance the earthen pots on their heads, syncing with singing and drumming. Altogether, it is a very difficult task to do.

A prominent feature of the Teratali dance is that the performers cover their faces with a veil during the performance. Their heads remain covered with either petha or some other fabric. Dancers tie small metal cymbals or manjiras on their body while holding a blade or sword in between their teeth. They also balance an ornamental earthen pot or matki on their heads.

They keep striking the manjiras with their hands and feet with the rhythm of the music. Their steps remain perfectly synced with instruments accompanied by the local folk songs, uneven drumming, and vocal singing, enhancing their performance. The requirement of rhythm is tough to achieve.
