Origin of Tippani Dance

Tippani Juriun originated in Saurashtra in Gujarat. This folk dance is also known as ‘Matla dance’, and ‘Tippani Nritya’. Tappani Juriun is an important dance during the festival of Holi and Diwali. It is also a celebratory dance done during the wedding season.

The dance originated among laborers to escape the monotony of their work lives. This dance is termed the dance form of the Koli community. The Halli community is also closely associated with this dance form.

Tippani Stick

The sticks women use as props during the dance performance are called ‘tippani’. The sticks used in tippani dance are 175 cm long with a wooden or iron block attached to them. The iron or woodblock attached to it, in the end, is called Garbo. This stick is used to press lime during the construction process.

Tippani dance is done by only women. It was women laborers who used to push lime into the floor. The men were at the sea working away from their families. The women added some folk songs and converted their work movements into steps. It truly is a spark of life and joy that can be found in the dullest of places.

Dance Performance

A group of females participates in this dance. At first two rows are formed and the dance start with slow steps. Women dance in rows and circles while beating the ground with sticks. Garbo makes sticks stronger and more balanced. So when dancers beat the floor with it it does not break or disbalances.

It is amazing to know how folk dances were not choreographed dances. They originated from the origin of human beings, how they dance, how they move, how they work etc.  Make sure you take a glimpse of this dance whenever you are in Gujarat.
