Rasleela Folk Dance of Manipur

Rasleela is a popular dance form of Manipur State. This dance form has a religious inclination and exhibits a pure feeling of love and compassion. It is known for its association with Hindu religious texts. Rasleela represents the sacred love between Hindu deities Radha and Krishna. The roots of the Dance performance lies in the Sanskrit text Natya Shashtra.

This dance drama is primarily performed in groups by both men and women. The performance includes two center artists that perform the role of Radha and Krishna. Other artists perform the role of “Gopiyan”. Gopiyan represents the pure devotion towards their love ‘Krishna’. Choreography varies from one region to another. The common aspect of Rasleela dance performance is the soft teasing with eyes and swift gestures of head and hands.

Female performers of Raslila wear bridal dresses of Manipur style, known as Potloi costume. The most prevalent one is the Kumli dress, whose skirt has multiple vibrant colors with beautiful embroidery. These skirts are stiffened from top to bottom with patterns and designs of Silver and golden color. The vivid borders of orchids, lotus, and other appealing plants in nature complement the small and elegant mirrors stitched to it. Faces of female artists are covered in a netted or transparent veil, which signifies elusiveness. A velvet blouse of mainly red or black color forms the top part of the dress. The male artist wears a comfortable cotton Dhoti, and a peacock feather tied with their crown.

Rasleela dance is complemented with lyrics inspired by the poetry of Jayadeva, Vidyapati, Govindadas, and other renowned poets. The songs contain a religious tone with devotional themes. Raslila dance is performed in conformity with a group of musicians, including Pung, mini kartals (Cymbals), wind-instrument, and harmonium players. A singer is also included to represent the pious songs with interest and enthusiasm.
